Scholarship Purpose
The KSURF Doctoral Research Scholarship provides strategic funding for recognizing the performance of outstanding Ph.D. students at Kansas State University who demonstrate superior academic achievements and scholarly abilities and whose research has the potential for disclosure of intellectual property and/or commercial application. Funding for this program is provided by the Kansas State University Research Foundation (KSURF), whose mission it is to promote, encourage and aid translational research that makes a difference in intellectual development and technology transfer at Kansas State University (http://www.k-state.edu/tech.transfer/).
Scholarship Award
Each scholarship provides a $15,000 stipend that may be supplemented with additional GRA or GTA funds and provides up to $5,000 for tuition. Graduate students may be employed as a Graduate Teaching or Research Assistant and be awarded the scholarship to support their research.
Allocation Process
The Graduate School makes available KSURF Doctoral Scholarships depending on funding annually allocated by the Kansas State University Research Foundation for this program. The scholarship competition is open to eligible resident Ph.D. students in any KSU College, Department or Program. Students are nominated by their major professors. Recipients will be selected by a University-wide Selection Committee established by the Dean of the Graduate School that includes five distinguished graduate faculty. The members of the selection committee represent a minimum of four colleges and one graduate faculty representative from the KSURF Board. Committee members serve on a three-year rotation appointment. Winners of the KSURF Recipients are not eligible to apply for the scholarship a second time.
Selection Process
Eligible students must have completed their preliminary exams and have been admitted to candidacy, the student's dissertation research should have been approved by their supervisory committee, and the students must have a minimum of two semesters to complete their research and meet graduation requirements. This award is intended to recognize exceptional scholastic achievement; research accomplishments; and service to the graduate program, university, or community. Nominees must show evidence of effective communication of research results through publications in leading journals and presentations at national and international meetings.
